A Harvard professor has spoken out about extraterrestrial life as he suggested we’re too stupid for aliens to pay us a proper visit.

As the chair of Harvard’s Department of Astronomy insisted, he believes that the mysterious cigar-shaped interstellar object that entered our solar system in 2017 could be alien technology.

In an interview with AFP, Loeb, who is the director of the Institute for Theory and Computation, suggested it would be arrogant of us to think we are the only ones out there.

“Thinking that we are unique and special and privileged is arrogant. The correct approach is to be modest and say: ‘We’re nothing special, there are lots of other cultures out there, and we just need to find them,’” he said.

The author of four books and over 700 scientific articles also went on to provide a series of likely reasons why potential visitors refuse to engage with us.

As he insisted in an interview with Daily Star, alien species might be keeping their distance from us simply because we are not intelligent enough. Another reason could also be that our planet doesn’t look desirable to them.

“The most common stars in the galaxy are dwarf stars. Most stars are about a tenth of the mass of the Sun and they are also twice cooler than the Sun so they are red,” he explained.

“They emit mostly infrared radiation and if there is life on planets next to them – that life will have infrared eyes and the grass will not be green on those planets, it will be dark red.

“So if you think about interstellar travel agents, they will not market the Earth as a desirable destination because for the infrared eyes of most of the creatures in the Milky Way the green grass is not particularly appealing, they want dark red grass so this could be an explanation for Fermi’s Paradox [of] why they don’t come to visit us.”

Though this could be the main reason why alien species refuse to pay us a visit, the professor pointed out we might not be intelligent or advanced enough to be deemed worthy of their attention.

“It’s possible that we are not that attractive and we are not very interesting in terms of our intelligence,” he added.

“For some reason, humans do not cooperate and that’s really unfortunate, and it’s not a sign of intelligence so I can imagine a much smarter kid on the block.”
