Going solo is totally healthy and normal.
But even though it has numerous health benefits, many women shy away from having alone sessions, according to a study.
If you are one of those people, below are the reasons why you should consider including masturbation in your self-care routine.
#1 It relieves period cramps
Having sex during your period can be messy. However, doing it alone is easy and it even comes with pain-relieving properties. Dr. Lauren Streicher said: “When you have an orgasm, the uterus contracts, which causes the blood to come out faster and allow you to be less crampy.”
But for some women, orgasms may aggravate the tension. “It’s just a matter of testing it out the technique to see if it works for you,” said Emily Morse, relationship and sex expert.
#2 It reduces stress and helps you sleep
Whenever you can’t sleep, try having orgasms. When you reach the peak, your body releases a relaxation hormone called prolactin and a happiness hormone called serotonin. Dr. Streicher said that many women have found doing solo sessions help them sleep better.
Morse also suggested: “Just turn off your phone, go into your room for 10 minutes, start to breathe and touch your body. By doing this, you’re taking care of yourself, experiencing pleasure, and getting in touch with your body—all of which give you a sense of well-being.”
#3 It improves your sex life
Before getting off with your partner, it is important to determine what works for you. “Run your hands down your body, take time for yourself, and see what makes you feel good,” Morse explained.
#4 It intensifies your orgasms
“Masturbating does expand your orgasmic potential,” Morse said. “So for women who struggle to have orgasms with or without their partner, it teaches you how to have an orgasm and increases your own sexual awareness.”
Take your time to know your body well and what arouses you. “The reality is it could take months to figure out how to have a G-spot orgasm, a clitoral orgasm, or even a blended orgasm.”
#5 It boosts confidence
“When you feel in control of your body and sexuality, it gives you more self-esteem in the bedroom,” Morse said. That confidence also carries over into other aspects of your life.
“A lot of women aren’t satisfied with the way their bodies look, but when we’re in control and connected to our bodies through masturbating, we learn a lot about who we are,” she added. “That can cultivate more positive feelings around our bodies and help us feel more confident inside and out.”
