A mother recalled the devastating moment she was told she might lose her arms and legs after feeling a sharp pain in her abdomen.
34-year-old Sadie Kemp is a mother-of-two from Peterborough, UK, who was rushed to the hospital after feeling severe pain in her kidneys while building a toy kitchen with her toddler son.
While the doctors gave the young lady some painkillers and discharged her, she was back in the ER just moments later when the pain only got worse.
During her second visit to the hospital, the medics finally discovered that the mother’s pain was due to a kidney stone that caused an infection in her kidney.
As a result of the infection, the woman suffered sepsis – a life-threatening medical emergency that happens when the body has an extreme reaction to an ongoing infection.
Following the discovery, Sadie was put in an induced coma. Two weeks later she woke up only for the doctors to tell her she faces losing her legs and arms.
While the doctors have already amputated her fingers, they now hope that her legs and toes can be saved from the same cruel fate.
“I was screaming in pain on the floor saying I felt like someone was squeezing my kidney,” the mom said as she recalled the time she first felt a sharp pain in her abdomen.
She added: “I’m just trying to get my head around why this happened and how this happened. It has left me without a job and a house.
“I’m not earning money for my kids. They haven’t got a roof over their heads and that makes me feel terrible. I just want to be there for them and give them some security.
“I was going through a divorce before this which had already cost me £10,000 [$13,000]. I’d just met my new partner and I thought I was finally starting from scratch and getting somewhere and then sepsis hit.”
To help the struggling mom get through her medical and financial ordeal, two of her friends have since started a GoFundMe page where they aim to raise $30,000 for her cause.
“I’ve realized I have been given a second chance at life. The doctors have told me they are so confused that I’m still here, I shouldn’t be alive given the amount of poison I had in my blood,” Sadie concluded.
