A 33-year-old woman who went to a doctor because of menstrual bleeding found out that she had a baby growing inside her liver.

Dr. Michael Narvey shared the case of ectopic pregnancy on TikTok and said: “This is a first for me.”

In an ectopic pregnancy, a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main cavity of the uterus. It usually occurs in the fallopian tubes but may also occur further outside the uterus.

But fertilized eggs can’t survive outside the uterus, making ectopic pregnancies fatal for both mother and babies. If left untreated, it may cause life-threatening bleeding.

Ectopic pregnancy in the abdomen is rarer than tubal pregnancy or ectopic pregnancy in the fallopian tubes, making the woman’s condition an extremely rare case.

That is why Dr. Michael Narvey of the Children’s Research Institute of Manitoba was left shocked when they discovered that there was a fetus inside the woman’s liver.

Describing the case, Narvey said: “I thought I had seen it all.”

“A 33-year-old woman comes in with a 14-day history of menstrual bleeding and 49 days since her last menstrual period,” he added.

Pointing to a sonogram of the growing fetus, he said: “What they find in the liver is this: a baby. She had an ectopic pregnancy in her liver.

“We see these sometimes in the abdomen but never in the liver. This is a first for me.”

In another TikTok clip, Narvey explained: “Normally, a fertilized egg, which usually gets fertilized in the fallopian tube, travels into the uterus, where it implants.

A fertilized egg “winds up getting stuck, most often in the fallopian tube” but “it’s possible, though, that if the egg and sperm unite and then travel the other way (in the fallopian tube), out the way of the ovary, they can implant in the peritoneum.”

The peritoneum is the tissue that lines the abdominal wall, covering most of the organs in the abdomen, according to Medline Plus.

But in the woman’s case, the sperm and egg “wound up traveling up to the liver where they implanted there.”

Doctors managed to save the 33-year-old woman’s life but couldn’t save the fetus, The Sun reported.
