A dog belonging to a rescue team was dubbed a hero after getting wounded while helping rescue people who got trapped under a collapsed building in China.
The incident occurred in Fujian Province where a hotel quarantined amid coronavirus outbreak collapsed, leaving dozens of people trapped beneath the rubble.
Assisting the rescue team was 6-year-old Bei Bei the English Springer Spaniel who was one of the first emergency responders to start exploring the wreckage in search of survivors.
For three days, the pooch worked nonstop and got her paws burned in the process.
According to firefighter Yi Wenbing who raised adorable Bei, the dog has been credited with finding six survivors.
“The surroundings were extremely rough. There were sharp iron pieces and broken glasses everywhere,” Wenbing said in an interview with The Beijing News.
“Yesterday afternoon we noticed that Bei Bei was moving more slowly and found cuts on all of its paws.”
Fortunately, Bei was immediately pulled from the mission after fellow rescuers noticed the wounds on her paws. Since then, she has also been receiving treatment and is in recovery.
Meanwhile, her story has also gone viral on social media where thousands of users applauded Bei for her contributions and branded her a hero.
According to recent reports, a total of 62 people were retrieved from the collapsed building while several remain trapped as of this writing.
In addition to Bei Bei and other rescue dogs, some one thousand rescuers including the police, firefighters, and special forces have been deployed to recover the victims.
