Saby, who found Loudell Hubbard in the woods, is a K-9 officer with the Birmingham Police SRT K9 Unit.
Officer Dustin Brock, his handler, has been working with the pooch for around two years.
It was on Tuesday when they had an opportunity to put Saby’s ability to detect and follow scents to the test by finding a 90-year-old woman with dementia. She had wandered off and gotten lost in the woods just behind her house in Birmingham, Alabama.
The elderly woman got a mile and a half from home and fell into a creek where she couldn’t get out again. She used her purse as a pillow and stayed their overnight.
Fortunately, Saby found her and led officers to the woman. While she was wet and bruised, she had no broken bones and was rushed to the hospital.
Talking about Saby’s abilities, Brock told WSET-TV: “It’s impossible for us to duplicate what he does and do his job as fast as he does.”
“The same time Richard came around the corner Saby was pulling me towards the creek,” he added. “I come around and she was laying in the creek.”
Officer Richard Wright also said: “I yelled ‘Ma’am can you hear me?’ She raised her head up and then we just went to her.
“When we got the call I was thinking if it was my grandmother I would hope someone would use all resources to go find her.”
Frederick Jones, Hubbard’s neighbor, said that locals had faith she would be found. “At the time everyone was still hopeful,” he expressed. “They had faith and was positive.”
Speaking about the reaction they had when Hubbard was found: “It was joy. Everybody was just elated. Everybody was thanking God and just elated. Really it brought tears to your eyes that she was OK.”
He continued: “The scripture tells us to love thy neighbor as thy self. That’s where we are with this.”
