In the port city of Aberdeen, a man proclaims he has no regrets after going back into a burning house to save his 8-year-old niece.
Derrick Byrd, a young man of 20, valiantly fought through the flames as he made his way into the second floor of his house to save his niece, Mercedes, who was trapped inside.
The incident occurred around 4 pm this Thursday when the fire broke out inside the three-storied house.
Derrick along with his sister Kayla Johnson managed to catch their nephews Rory and Junior by forcing them out the window on the second floor. Meanwhile, Byrd realised that his niece was still inside the house.
Without giving it a second thought, Byrd entered the house to rescue her. According to Byrd, little Mercedes was too scared to jump from the window and had been calling out his name.
Running to the second floor, Byrd took his shirt off to cover the face of the little girl so she would not inhale any smoke coming out for the fire.
Byrd was engulfed in flames, suffering serious second and third-degree burns. Soon after the man carried his niece out of the building, emergency responders arrived at the scene. They immediately took the family to the hospital for treatment.
Speaking to the media about his brave act, Byrd said that he is no hero and would do the entire thing again if he had to as the life of his niece was much more important to him than his own. Even Lieutenant CJ Chastain of Aberdeen Police lauded his bravery.
The reason for the fire is yet to be known with investigations being carried on. Meanwhile, garnering media attraction from various places, the family has received many donations from the Red Cross after the incident.
