For a woman, her wedding day is the happiest day of her life.
A wedding is a promise of lifelong happiness, companionship, respect, and trust after all.
And beginning a new life with the person you love and starting your own family is probably the most beautiful thing.
But for some, marriages are not happy, they are a punishment. Some wives end up losing their lives in the hands of their husbands over petty issues. And so, marriages become a nightmare for several women.
Domestic violence is not just receiving a slap, it is lifelong torture, and at times, it could lead to death. Domestic violence is so common yet not spoken about enough. And its impact on women is hardly depicted.
Therefore, an artist in Turkey decided to do something extraordinary with the hope to make a change in society. Almost 40% of Turkish women have faced domestic violence in their life, with some cases meeting tragic ends.
In 2018 alone, 440 women were killed by their own husbands. This forced and artist, Vahit Tuna, take a monumental step to display the agony of women in such a way that remains in history for a very long time.
As a result, he put on 440 pairs of shoes on a building to highlight those women, who were killed by their husbands.
Vahit said that his act was inspired by witnessing multiple messages about domestic violence on social media but was aware that these stories disappear just as quickly as the stories rise to the attention of the public.
So, he hung up 440 shoe pairs on the wall of one building in Istanbul, Turkey.
He chose high heels because they symbolize feminine power as well as independence that he wants every woman to possess. These high heels do not belong to any victim but are a cultural gesture.
