A new page of history has been turned as a woman has gone on to be named the highest-paid CEO, for the first time in the history of Australia.
The chief of the Macquarie Group, Shemara Wikramanayakee has earned about $18 million for the financial year 2018- 19. This is reportedly $5 million higher from the next corporate boss on the list.
Daughter of a Sri Lankan migrant, 57-year-old Shemara was one among those 4 women who had been able to make it to the list of top 50 in Open Director’s annual CEO pay report, which is meant for the Australian Financial Review.

Formerly a corporate lawyer, Shemara’s basic salary is calculated to be about $722,000 in addition to which she also receives performance bonuses and share options as well.
It is calculated that she earns an average of $346,000 per week which is 211 times more than what an average Australian full-time worker earns. Perhaps this is why her investment bank and financial service group has been named as the “Millionaire’s factory”
Shemara has also created history by being the Macquarie Group’s first-ever woman CEO and female managing director.
Before joining in Australia as CEO, she had also worked in nine other cities for the company across the Globe. In fact, Shemara had first joined the company back in 1987.
She had also been named by the American Fortune magazine as one of the most powerful women owing to her role in tackling the emerging problem of climate change as well as the World Bank’s global commission on adoption.
However, on rounding out the first five of the highest-paid CEO’s list was BHP’s Andrew Mackenzie who earned a whopping amount of about $10.5 million
