The time spent on lockdown has forced people to revisit their DIY skills or develop them if they didn’t have any.

Unfortunately, there are reasons why some people are actually paid to do certain things because while what they’re doing may look easy, it’s a whole different ballgame when an amateur tries to put it in practice.

There have been lots of pics shared on social media about lockdown haircut disasters and now some dogs have taken a bit of an embarrassing hit as well after their owners decided that grooming them should be a walk in the park. Spoilers: it wasn’t.

One woman even posted a pic of her dispirited-looking dog on Twitter, writing: “I don’t think he’ll ever trust a human again,” referring to his mom’s ill-fated attempt to “try grooming the dog.”

Hayley Byrne-Ingle, a groomer at The Kennel Club, advises people who want to groom their own pets that “a lot can go wrong without the correct training” and “clippers or scissors on a moving target is not as easy as most people think!”

One of the most common mistakes that pet owners make when grooming at home is “reaching straight for the clippers used for human hair,” Hayley said. “These clippers usually have one very short blade and used on dogs will take their coat very short!” she explained.

Another common mistake is giving your dog a bath without brushing their fur beforehand. “A lot of dogs now will be getting long and smelly and it’s very tempting to bathe them,” but this is a big mistake, warns Hayley. “Bathing without brushing can lead to matting of the coat as a small single knot when water is added can form a layer of mats.”

Instead, she advises to let the pros do their job. There is a high chance of causing injuries to your dog if you groom them at home and “can leave your dog with a bad experience.”

Of course, with lockdowns in place and pet grooming services likely suspended, it’s not always possible to let the pros handle it. But all is not lost. Investing in a good brush can help you bond with your furry family member without risking their fur.
