During the summer, when the area can be accessed easily, there are around 100 people at every one of the four Antarctic bases.

During the long dark winter, the staff is cut down to the minimum possible of 14-20 people who are required to remain there throughout the winter, isolated from the rest of the world.

In order to be safe, the staff must take care of themselves and others as the small community survives the winter together as a unit.

The level of isolation here is the most extreme that’s possible. Not everyone can endure such isolation and loneliness.

In order to make sure the research team can survive the winter, the Australian Antarctic Division rigorously tests the psychological and physical abilities of the team in the hardest way possible.

If you think you can make your own fun in the wilderness and can learn new skills at this job, you can apply regardless of your gender.
