Free-spirited hitchhiker travelled 10 years to reach different destination around the globe in more than 2000 cars and even shared his journey with strangers in different vehicles.

Mathias Risberg was born in a small town of Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. He loved travelling from his early teens and even started his adventures to far off destinations when he was only 18. Amazingly he was able to see more of the globe when he was only 29.
When he turned 18, he has been to the destination, quite far from him, such as Pakistan, Iran.point 194 | Guatemala, and El Salvador.point 218 |
Mathias extensive travel from the last 10 years can be estimated from figures that he travelled in 2028 cars, 410 trucks, 180 buses, 125 taxis and 2 ice-cream truck.point 137 | Mathis has no regrets in his life after so much adventure.point 185 | 1
The journey of free road trips started when Mathias was a young boy, as he used to take rides back home from school with strangers. But his trust lost on strangers for the next 6 years when his teachers warned and educated him about the dangers of travelling free with strangers on roads. Mathias said: “People told me I could not trust stranger, but it was strangers who were telling me this”.
Mathias stay during his journey to different destinations was surprising as he once stayed in a cheese factory in El Salvador and even in a police station in Pakistan.point 256 |
He literally stayed in whatever he found, from hammocks to beaches to mansions.point 67 | As Mathias says: “I love the freedom, the new friendships, the quality dialogues about important life that you can get while riding a car”.point 187 | 1
Hitchhiking can make you vulnerable and Mathias is no exception as he was once robbed at knife-point and people ignoring his lifestyle. But for him, pleasant experiences during hitchhiking has outweighed the bad ones such as memories of music, house parties and random destinations whom he called his home. Mathias added: “You usually have to sleep outside, in case you do not get picked up”.
After reaching a new country, Mathias uses different methods to earn money. He also hosts a Hitchhiking school in which he teaches young toddlers about the rules of the road. Mathias favourite location is Iran but he has a dream to cross Atlantic and travel onward to Hollywood.
