Hocus Pocus 2 is officially getting made with director Adam Shankman slated to helm the classic Halloween movie for Disney+, reported PEOPLE.
The 55-year-old Shankman is known for films such as Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise, the 2007 musical Hairspray, and 2002’s A Walk to Remember.
Sharing the good news on Instagram, Shankman wrote: “Yep….Thanks with all of my heart dear @disney Looks like Il be working on a looooooottttt of magic for a while… I feel incredibly honored and humbled to be guiding forward these two Disney crown jewel legacies.”
He added, “My only hope is to honor those who came before me and build something new and exciting, as I desperately try to not let down the fans and enchant the new initiates! Fingers crossed! Xo.”
The most recent film he directed was What Men Want which came out last year. Currently, he’s directing the Enchanted sequel, also for Disney+.
The original 1993 film starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy who played three witches who were resurrected. They then started on a quest for immortality by feeding off the souls of children.
A sequel was first announced in October 2019. So far, there’s has been no word if the original cast will be in the sequel or if the sequel will actually be a reboot and feature a new cast of characters.
Midler definitely wants to reprise her role as Winifred Sanderson which she had repeatedly said before is her favorite acting role.
The singer-actress even encouraged fans to “inundate the Disney company” during a Reddit AMA in November 2014.
“I have canvassed the girls and they are willing to do it, but we have no say in it,” said Midler. She even dressed up as Winifred Sanderson for Halloween and sang the hit song from the movie, “I Put a Spell on You.”
“So if you want a Hocus Pocus 2, ask the Walt Disney company.”
Parker also said that she was excited at doing a sequel with her co-stars during an interview in the fall of 2016.
“I would love that,” Parker said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “I think we’ve all been fairly vocal about being very keen but that hasn’t created any groundswell of movement.”
