A homeless man has gone viral after pleading with people to help him get his pet rat back after it was stolen by a heartless yob(s).
59-year-old homeless man Chris has been at his spot in Sydney, Australia, for many years. By his side, there had been a pet rat named Lucy who helped Chris get through rough days.
Thanks to their extraordinary relationship, Lucy and Chris became local celebrities who always entertained strangers who asked to take photos with the rat.
According to Alyson Pearce, a Sydney woman who regularly visits Chris, however, Lucy the Rat had been stolen from the unfortunate man.
After seeing Chris’ sign explaining that Lucy had been stolen, Alyson went on a mission to find Lucy.
“Almost every day since I started my job in the city Chris & his pet rat Lucy have sat in the same spot, Chris chatting to passersby & Lucy happily munching, sleeping & looking on,” Alyson wrote on Facebook.
“They are a feature of Sydney city life and I have always smiled when I see them & felt glad they had each other.
“I was genuinely distressed to pass by today & see Chris without Lucy and for him to tell me that on Saturday some heartless person had whisked her away. Taking a homeless person’s loved pet – seriously, what a really low act.”
Following her online plea, thousands of people shared the heartbreaking story in hopes of finding Lucy.
“I’ve passed him so many times he’s always been so friendly my son is always amazed that he has a pet ray that doesn’t try and run away,” one person wrote.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia about his beloved pet, Chris said:
“I don’t want to press charges against the person who stole Lucy. I just want her back.
“She was family. I would lean down to her and say, ‘how are you?’ and she would get up on her hind legs and give me a peck.
“I don’t know why this had to happen to me. I haven’t done anything bad to deserve this – I was brought up to respect people.”
Explaining how Lucy got stolen while he was in the bathroom, the 59-year-old added:
“Everyday this week, I’ve been thinking should I have waited a little longer before I went to the bathroom. But I always go to the bathroom and she’s always there when I get back. I’m scared that if I leave this place, she’ll come back and I won’t be there.”
