Homeless Woman Became An Internet Sensation After Her Subway Performance Went Viral


A homeless woman has been dubbed the “Subway Soprano” after a video of her singing at a subway station went viral online.

Emily Zamourka was spotted singing at the Purple Line station in Koreatown, Los Angeles, California.

One Los Angeles police officer filmed the moment Emily sang Giacomo Puccini’s Italian aria “O Mio Babbino Caro” at the subway station.

The Los Angeles police officer shared the video online and Emily became an Internet sensation overnight.

Later it turned out Emily is a Russian immigrant who was granted political asylum but due to the medical bills and the theft of her violin, she became homeless.

“I could not keep up with the bills. I could not keep up with the rent”, she said.

After the video of Emily went viral, hundreds of people donated to raise funds to help her find a home.

She thanked the people who donated to help her find a home. She said: “From the bottom of my heart I just wanted to thank everyone for what they’re doing. And what they’re trying still to do.”

Joel Diamond – the Grammy-nominated music producer – offered her a recording contract while Los Angeles Council member, Joe Buscaino invited her to perform on stage.

For the first time, Emily sang on a stage in front of the audience. She said: “I don’t even know what’s happening. It’s so much. So fast. What’s happening is something I can’t believe. I’m speechless. It’s almost like a miracle.”

When she was asked where she learned to sing, Emily said she never learned to sing classically and didn’t attend music school.

It is unbelievable that without any training, she sings so beautifully. The woman is getting support and love from everyone.

She now wants to raise awareness as she says there are so many people who are like her and she wants to tell them not to lose hope. She said: “We are all the same. We are all the same.”
