According to a new report, there is an increasing virus issue in Hong Kong, which is related to mainland China.
The country is seeing an increasing rate of rat hepatitis E spreading from rats to humans. Something like this is happening for the first time in history, and nobody is sure what is happening.
The first such case was reported back in 2018 when the infectious disease experts at the University of Hong Kong assessed a man who had a liver transplant and was going through liver issues.
The test revealed that his immune system was reacting to hepatitis E; however, they could not find the strain of HEV or hepatitis E virus in the blood.
The first test for the human strain of HEV came out negative, so the experts redesigned the test and performed it again and, for the first time, found rat hepatitis E in a human being.
A microbiologist at HKU, Dr. Siddharth Sridhar, said that all of a sudden we have a virus that can transmit from street rats to humans but he also added that it is yet to be determined whether it is just one-off incident.
Ever since the first discovery, ten more cases have been recorded, with the most recent being identified in a man in Hong Kong. The infected person did not have any signs of rats in his home or travel history.
This has emerged as a new mystery, and no one can tell how these people are being infected. Since two years of discovery, researchers have not been able to determine how this virus is transmitting from rats to humans.
There are multiple theories like people drinking contaminated water or handling contaminated objects, but nothing has been proven definitively.
Center for Health Protection in Hong Kong in April said that the man was still being treated at the hospital. And they are not sure how long it takes the patients to get sick post the virus exposure.
With the medication used to treat the human variant of hepatitis E providing mixed results, they are trying to come up with a more precise treatment.
