An investigation revealed the hidden horrors behind a popular tourist activity – with horses and camels beaten forced to walk in the smoldering heat without food and beaten with sticks in the testicles.
For as low as $8, tourists have ridden past the Great Pyramid of Giza and other popular sights on a camel’s back, usually stopping for photos and selfies with the animal.
But less than an hour’s drive away from the hotels and monuments, camels are reportedly being beaten until they ‘scream.’
Hundreds of the animals are being sold off daily at the biggest camel market in Birqash which is located around 20 miles away from the Saqqara burial site and the pyramids.
The shocking video obtained by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) showed the horrible treatment the animals had to endure.
One video showed an injured camel forced to stand in the heat while blood was streaming out of its nose. Other shows one trying to run away because it was hit with sticks.
Some camels are struck in the testicles and left ‘foaming at the mouth.’
PETA shared the video with The Sun and claimed many animals giving ride to tourists at Saqqara and The Great Pyramid come from ‘cruel’ markets.
An investigation discovered some of the animals are left ‘screaming’ in pain before they were sold off to give ‘endless rides in the heat.’
When the camels are no longer useful, some of them are returned to the markets to be slaughtered for meat. Even though camel meat is not a typical dish in restaurants, it is consumed by many locals.
PETA is now calling for a ban on the use of animals at tourists sites and urges tourists to not ride the creatures.
“Tourists who pay to go for a ride are keeping these operations in business,” PETA says.
