Howard Smith and his wife Lois Kittson were forced to stay apart from each other for 56 days due to the coronavirus lockdown.
Married for 50 years, the couple finally reunited this week at a safe distance when Lois arrived at Kittson’s nursing home located in upstate New York.
Howard has been visiting his wife every day for years at the nursing home and used to spend 35 minutes at the front of the New Paltz Center Facility where she had been living from the last five years.
Being a last-stage Alzheimer’s patient, she had to stay at the care facility; instead of home.
During this reunion, special safety precautions were taken care of; the couple met at a safe distance, and they were not allowed to touch.
Howards wore a mask and had to stand six feet away from his wife.
Lois was wrapped in a blanket and wore a sun hat, and she was assisted by a nurse in her wheelchair.
As soon as Howard saw his wife, his eyes lit up. He spent the visiting minutes updating Lois about the world, their homes in Hudson River Valley, New York, and their daughter Laurel (27) who is hoping to join him in the next visit.
Howard told that due to her illness, Lois had lost her power of speech, but she smiled at him a couple of times and made weak noises.
The story of this couple was published last month that also highlighted their separation due to the pandemic.
With older people being the most vulnerable and nursing homes across the country taking strict measures, it is unsure whether or not the couple will be able to see each other again.
This visit has given a ray of hope to many people who have been separated by their loved ones who are living at nursing homes across the US.
