A mother gave birth to a baby boy weighing over 14lbs (6 kg) and his birth weight is almost double the newborn average!
Finnley Patonai, was born weighing a whopping 14lbs (6.4 kg) and his parents have revealed that he is already wearing clothes for a 9-month-old child.
Mother Cary and father Tim Patonai, from Phoenix, Arizona, said they knew they were expecting a big baby, with doctors predicting the newborn would weigh around 13lbs 8oz (6.1 kg), but he shattered those estimations.
The average weight of a newborn is around 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg), though between 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg) and 10 lbs (4.5 kg) is considered normal.
Cary was scheduled to deliver via C-section on October 5 when, the day before, things got pushed forward at her checkup.
“My water broke on the scale as I was getting weighed, so my scheduled C-section got moved up a day,” she said.
“As soon as they pulled him out, they’re like, “oh my gosh, that’s huge!” Cary said. “Everybody was freaking out like I’ve never seen a baby that big I can’t believe it. So perfect and round in every way. He’s definitely my squishy little honey bear.”
The family said Finnley’s size has made him a celebrity at the hospital, where he spent eight days in NICU after birth.
“Finnley was a little celebrity at the hospital,” Cary said. “Nurses and doctors were non-stop talking about him.”
He was born by cesarean section at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona. The doctor said he was the biggest baby he had given birth to and seen in nearly 30 years as a medical professional.
Banner Thunderbird Medical Center only carried diapers for newborns – but Finnley is already a size two, so they had to put in a special order for his size.
“There was one point in the NICU that he was one of four babies, and his weight was their three total altogether, so we were laughing at that,” Carrie said.
The Patonai family also had to hurry to get larger baby clothes for the newcomer, as the clothes they bought were completely too small.
“I wanted him to fit in the clothes we had saved from his other two brothers, but everything we had was entirely too small,” she said.
In addition to being heavy, Finnley was “quite tall” and measured 23.75 inches long.
Cary and Tim had already welcomed two boys, Devlen, 10, and Everett, 2, via C-section, each weighing 3.7kg and 5kg. Finnley is now at home with the family, settling in just fine with his older brothers, Emmett and Tim.
“I think he’s just perfect in every way,” Emmet said. “I don’t even care if he’s bigger than me. I love him!”
“I’m excited I feel like my family’s complete now,” Devlen added.
Cary said Finnley is her third child, and he was born after she suffered 19 miscarriages since 2008.
“He is such a good, sweet baby,” the proud mother said. “I am so grateful everything ended on such a great positive side.”
