Sarah Churman was completely deaf until recently.
Her parents’ DNA together caused her hair in the middle ear, which transmits the sound wave to the brain, not to form.
Thanks to deaf ed school and speech therapy, she was able to speak without impediments but she couldn’t hear two of her kids laughing and cooing.

In the video below, Ellen asks her about the feeling of listening to the sounds of the world. Sarah answers that she is incredibly happy to hear the sounds that she never expected to hear such as her husband’s snoring and herself laughing.
The procedure costs $30,000 per ear, and she only has one ear treated so far. As Sarah and her husband couldn’t afford it, Sarah’s mother-in-law, Lari, cashed her retirement fund because the insurance does not cover.
