Hunting season is practically a tradition in some parts of the United States.
It’s not so much about bagging the kill as it is about bonding with one’s buddies or even between father and son.
A young man shared a video he took last November 2, 2017, when he was out bow hunting in the evening. As he was walking from his stand, he saw a whitetail and heard some frantic movements.
Walking carefully with his camera light pointed in the direction of the movement he came upon an unusual sight. It was a deer with its antlers stuck on a tree trying desperately to dislodge itself.
The deer was probably marking its territory as part of the mating season and had the misfortune of getting its antlers stuck in the process.
Hunters know how difficult it can be to get close enough to deer for a clean kill shot so this was as perfect an opportunity as any. However, instead of delivering the coup de grace, the hunter instead put his bow down and tried to free the deer himself.
The hunter was unsuccessful so he went back home to ask his dad for help. His dad had just come home from a hunt himself and asked his son if he had managed to bag a deer. The son replied no but that he needed help to free a deer from a tree.
After a confused look from his dad, the hunter explained the situation.
Both father and son tried to pry the antlers out but the deer kept fighting them. That’s probably understandable because aside from not being used to such close proximity to humans, the poor guy probably thought his head was on the way to decorate their fireplace!
Both hunters decided that they needed a chainsaw and that’s when the son started filming.
After a few cuts, the dad tells his son to be careful because they didn’t know what direction the deer would bolt to.
Finally, after a final heave part of the branch falls off and the deer takes off into the night with the dad laughing and shouting, “You’re welcome!”
“One of the coolest and crazy ends to a hunt I have ever had,” the hunter later wrote.
While it may be too much to expect both hunters to have turned vegan after that encounter, it’s still enlightening to see an act of kindness and compassion in such a situation.
