A grieving wife has revealed how she tried to save her 64-year-old husband when he collapsed during a video call.
Martin Farthing and his wife Sara Farthing were Facetiming their family members on Wednesday, April 22 at their home in Woodlands Avenue, Swansea when Martin complained of ‘heartburn’.
Sara, a retired nurse, immediately went into the kitchen to bring Gaviscon but Mr. Farthing collapsed. Sara tried to resuscitate Mr. Farthing but the father-of-two died of a heart attack.
Sara said: “The word I seem to be using at the moment is surreal. He had been working in his makeshift office at home until 4.20pm and
then we were making the most of the lovely weather, doing a bit of DIY outside.”
The couple then Facetimed their son and grandson but during the call, Mr. Farthing told her: ‘I have got terrible heartburn’.
She went to the kitchen to bring some Gaviscon but her husband collapsed. She tried her best to save his life but she couldn’t save him.
Sara said: “The next thing I knew I heard this almighty thud. There must have been about 20 seconds where I was in a complete panic, but I tried to resuscitate him until the paramedics got here.”
Mr. Farthing has left behind his wife Sara, two sons Paul, and Adam, and a grandkid Dyfan.
Mr. Farthing, who was a lecturer in engineering at The Welding Institute at Great Abbington in Cambridge, received a loyalty award from the college.
After his death, his wife Sara said: “His death certificate said he suffered a heart attack. He was taken far too early.”
“It is a wave of emotions at the moment for us all. The family will miss him greatly. Life is going to be very different without him. I can’t imagine how the future is going to be now, we did so much together.”
Mr. Farthing’s funeral will be held on Monday, May 11 which will be attended by only 10 people due to the coronavirus crisis.
