The couple’s two daughters even said their final goodbyes and read Mother’s Day cards to their dying mum on March 22.

However, when Adam, a former news editor with the Times and now a PR consultant, asked the doctors if they had any ‘weird and wacky’ treatment that could save his wife, the doctors told him they had but it could have killed her.

Adam wrote in the Times: “I remember asking if there was ‘anything weird or wacky’ he had heard about, anything experimental that was working abroad. It was a desperate plea that I knew he couldn’t answer.”

Adam was then told about ‘Proning’ which has been used in ICU’s for years. But, the doctors told him that it could have killed Stacey.

Adam asked the doctors to try as he said she was “going to die anyway”.

In ‘Proning’, the patient is turned onto their stomach that promotes oxygen flow, blood flow and improves the lungs.

Adam said: “But he warned because Stacey’s heart wasn’t working properly and her heart and her kidneys, it would probably kill her – the pressure on her heart would be fatal.”

“But I remember saying to him, look, well she’s going to die anyway and he said yes – so the three of us decided that there was nothing really to lose. We had to give it a shot.”

The doctors turned Stacey on her stomach for 12 hours and miraculously, she recovered.

Adam was told to go home and the doctors said they would ring him if anything bad happens.

Nothing bad happened and the doctors turned her again on her stomach the next day for 15 hours.

Adam said: “Then on Tuesday evening the house phone did ring, and it could only the hospital. I remember running for the phone, my heart pumping – I couldn’t hear what was being said.”

“And it was a lovely nurse – I believe called Abby – who started the conversation with ‘can I just say what a remarkable woman your wife is.”

Adam was told that Stacey was doing well after being turned on her stomach. She was still on life support but Adam was now hopeful.

He said the doctors had told him that she would die and if they hadn’t done this, she would definitely have died.
