Under a radical new plan, immigrants who fail to learn English within 18 months could lose benefits.
Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party released a new policy that requires immigrants to learn English if they want to keep Centrelink unemployment benefits.
Failing to grasp the language within 18 months would see them deprived of $550 a fortnight in Newstart payments.
Mark Latham, One Nation’s News South Wales leader, said immigrants who failed to learn English within 18 months needed to lose their welfare benefits to tackle ‘ethnic enclaves.’
He told Daily Mail Australia: “Unless you have an incentive, people will continue down the current path which is a disaster for Australia.”
820,000 people spoke little or no English at all across Australia, according to the 2016 Census.
“It’s a startling insight into how divided and segregated our society’s been,” Latham added.
The former federal Labor leader said the issue of immigrants refusing to learn English had worsened during the past few years.
“A blase attitude, “You can’t pick on anyone who doesn’t speak English, that’s their right”,” he said. “It’s not a right in Australia.
“It creates separatism. People don’t have a common bond of citizenship, of belonging to the same society.”
Mr. Latham also said his area of outer Sydney became more segregated.
“I’ve seen changes in western Sydney in the last 10 years that I never thought I’d see, and a lot of it is based around welfare dependency and non-English speaking ethnic enclaves,” he continued.
“It’s a product of low-skill migration, it’s a product of certain ethnic groups that congregate in the ethnic enclaves.”
Mr. Latham also said 18 months was long enough to give a new arrival to learn English. “To get a job, it helps to speak English,” he said.
“To participate in community groups, lead a good social life, indeed it’s essential to speak English.”
