The implant is just of a size of a credit card and has tiny little tubes, which are injected with insulin-producing cells.
Tests and researches show that the cell makes blood vessels grow around it to create a functional organ that produces insulin and is able to control body sugar level.
Trials of the new implant have started on the type 1 diabetes patients, that affects around 300,000 people in the UK alone.
There has been no cure for diabetes to completely take it away, just insulins to keep the sugar levels of body artificially controlled. The new implant deals with the cause rather than just the symptoms of the disease by transplanting new islet cells.
The implant of poach is capable of resolving the problem as it becomes an organ that generates insulin and also is able to protect itself from attacks by the immune system. The material from which it is made does not break down as it is a special kind of a polymer and is completely safe for the body.
The implant takes place in two different steps; the first step procedure is done by injecting the cells under the abdominal skin, where, in 3 weeks, tissues and vessels grow.
The second procedure includes injecting of thousands of donor islet cells.
The treatment is safe to be done on humans, and according to the researches, the technique will help in curing other chronic diseases in the future too.
