Stray Rescue of St. Louis found a dog with a broken foot in East St Louis on June 11. The rescue centre trapped her for treatment.
The injured dog, who had given birth to 13 puppies, then alerted Donna Lochmann and colleagues to her pups.
The injured dog had hidden her puppies in a den to keep them safe.
Stray Rescue of St. Louis found seven female and six male pups were hidden inside a den safely. The rescuers praised the dog for being so brave that despite having a broken leg, she managed to lead them to the pups.
Natalie Thomas, director of marketing, said: “We were able to trap the dog with the injured foot. It turned out she was full of milk. She did such a good job hiding them to keep them safe.”
“They were all chubby little puppies. She was very thin, you could see her spine, and we believe her foot injury was an old wound caused by being hit by a car.”
“The hardest part was crawling through the dense patch of woods to find them. We scoured every inch and finally found them, sort of under a log/fallen tree.”
“It is an amazing feeling to know they won’t grow up on the streets, scrounging for their next meal.”
The 13 puppies are healthy and safe and have been reunited with their mother after the rescue.
Unfortunately, the dog requires surgery on her broken foot. The rescue centre is now urging people to donate for the injured mother dog.
