The coronavirus crisis in Italy has taken the lives of 37 doctors and infected over 6,200 medical workers.
According to the Italian Federation of Medical Professionals, three more doctors passed away from coronavirus in Naples, Foggia, and Bergamo, bringing the total deaths of doctors to 37.
Filippo Anelli, president of the doctor’s federation, said: “What we face every day is a real war bulletin. Doctors and their families mourn their dead.”
The federation has warned that the true number of deaths may be higher as “many doctors die suddenly, even if the cause of death is not directly attributable to the virus, because the swab is not carried out.”
In addition, at least one nurse is believed to have committed suicide after contracting the infection and fearing she had spread the virus to other patients.
34-year-old Daniela Trezzi had been working on the front line at a Lombardy hospital. The National Federation of Nurses confirmed her death and revealed that ‘a similar episode had happened a week ago in Venice, with the same underlying reasons.’
The federation said: “Each of us has chosen this profession for good and, unfortunately, also for bad: we are nurses. The condition and stress to which our professionals are subjected is under the eyes of all.”
Many hospitals in Italy have been overwhelmed by the number of cases and are facing shortages of medical supplies and ventilators.
Thousands of doctors are falling sick and have been taken away from the front line.
The head of the Gimbe foundation, Nino Cartabellotta, urged that this ‘phenomenon’ must be ‘curbed to safeguard those who take care of us.’
As well as general practitioners and hospital doctors, the dead include ophthalmologist, dentists, and psychiatrists.
