Following 16-year-old Greta Thunberg’s fierce speech at the United Nations Climate Summit, Jason Momoa has also spoken out at the UN and divided his fans by calling humanity a disease that infects our planet.
Momoa appeared at the Small Islands Event to address the world leaders and accuse them of not doing enough to counter climate change and the destruction of marine ecosystems.
Not only did the Aquaman actor blame the leaders but he also claimed that humanity is “a disease that is infecting our planet,” a comment that caused a divide between his fans.
In his speech, Jason said:
“In this environmental crisis the oceans are in the state of emergency.
“Entire marine ecosystems are vanishing with the warming of the seas.
“The waste of the world empties into our waters.
“We face the devastating crisis of plastic pollution.
“We are a disease that is infecting our planet.
“There are more plastic particles in the ocean than the stars in the Milky Way.
“But make no mistake. The Earth doesn’t need us.”
Speaking of his experience at the UN meeting on Twitter, Jason Momoa wrote:
“That was a life changing moment, a true honor to represent island nations at the UN. It takes an amazing team and support system to pull off something like this. I am deeply grateful to my wife and children, my mother.”
While most of the actor’s fans applauded him for standing up to the world leaders, not everyone was pleased with his comments about humanity being a disease.
“Maybe, like all other celebrities, he should stick to what he does best and that’s playing pretend,” someone wrote.
“He probably took a private jet to get that in the first place then he’s gonna preach to us about humanity being a disease…” another one said.
