Amazon CEO and one of the world’s richest people has revealed he’s donating nearly $100 million towards 32 foundations that are fighting homelessness and helping families without a home get a shelter.
The announcement came from the Bezos Day 1 Fund, the man’s own charity foundation, one year after the billionaire worth $109 billion founded it and pledged $2 billion to run it.
The $98.5 million donation was distributed to 32 groups originating from 23 US states whereas each individual contribution ranged somewhere between $1.25 million and $5 million.
According to Bezos’ charity, which was established in September 2018, the foundation aims to launch Montessori-inspired preschools and fund groups that work to reduce homelessness.
The generous donation came shortly after Michael Jordan, the sports legend who is known for his big heart and compassionate actions, has announced the opening of a health center named after him after donating over $7 million of his own money to fund a clinic for uninsured individuals in his hometown two years ago.
During the opening ceremony of The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic, the former basketball star broke into tears as he guaranteed proper healthcare for uninsured people of Charlotte, his hometown.
“This is a very emotional thing for me to be able to give back to a community that has supported me over the years,” the 56-year-old Charlotte Hornets owner said in his opening speech.
“It’s … from the heart… I stand here before you as a proud parent, son, obviously a member of this community. You see my name, but yet you see a lot of people behind me and the commitment, especially from my mom, about caring for other people and being a part of a community that matters.”
Mr. Jordan donated $7 million towards the establishment of the health center back in 2017. Now, the center has been in operation for several weeks with over 300 patients already being granted treatment.
