Actor and comedian Jim Carrey has spoken out about The Mask and said he would be willing to do a sequel of the popular 1994 comedy movie under the right conditions.
As the 58-year-old Canadian-American actor suggested, he doesn’t want to do a sequel unless there was a “crazy visionary filmmaker” behind it.
Mr. Carrey has risen to fame thanks to hits like Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, and Dumb and Dumber in which his unique facial expressions gave the viewers a whole new view on the plot.
While the actor has shifted his focus from the comedy scene to wilder and often darker projects during the last decade, his appearance as Dr. Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog signifies that another shift may be in order.
Speaking of the chances of doing The Mask sequel in an interview with ComicBook, Carrey said:
“I don’t think in terms of sequels and stuff like that, I mean, this one [Sonic The Hedgehog] is kind of right for it because we have not evolved the character [Dr Robotnik a.k.a. Dr Eggman] fully yet.
“The Mask I think, myself, you know, it would depend on a filmmaker. It depends on a filmmaker really. I don’t want to do it just to do it. But I would only do it if it was some crazy visionary filmmaker. Sure.”
While Carrey has gotten the fans’ hopes up by a notch, there is a chance that the movie’s sequel wouldn’t feature the actor at all even if it does happen.
“I’d like it to be another character film about a person dealing with absolute power. The whole theme of The Mask was we all say what we would do if we had absolute power, just like Stanley Ipkiss,” co-creator Mike Richardson said in an interview with Forbes in 2019.
“When we get absolute power, we often resort to the most petty of endeavors and it’s overcoming our human nature and using the power for good.”
