Former president Jimmy Carter has paid tribute to the love of his life as they prepare to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary.

The 39th president and his wife Eleanor Rosalynn Smith are still living in the same town where they were born and had their first date.

The couple have traveled the world together as Naval officer and military officer, US president and first lady, and human rights and public health ambassadors.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the 96-year-old said: “It’s a full partnership.”

The 75th wedding anniversary of the longest-married presidential couple in the history of America on will be another milestone for them.

“My biggest secret is to marry the right person if you want to have a long-lasting marriage,” he expressed.

“Every day there needs to be reconciliation and communication between the two spouses.”

Carter and Rosalynn read the Bible together every night, even when they were separated by their travels.

“We don’t go to sleep with some remaining differences between us,” he said.

Rosalynn Carter also highlighted the importance of finding common interests.

“Jimmy and I are always looking for things to do together,” she shared. But she also emphasized: “Each (person) should have some space. That’s really important.”

The former first lady told AP: “We developed a partnership when we were working in the farm supply business, and it continued when Jimmy got involved in politics.

“I knew more on paper about the business than he did. He would take my advice about thing.”

Carter did not seek his wife’s permission to make his first bid for office but she was still on board. “My wife is much more political,” he said, to which she interjected: “I love it. I love campaigning. I had the best time. I was in all the states in the United States. I campaigned solid every day the last time we ran.”

The couple plans to celebrate their anniversary in Plains.

“We have too many people invited,” Rosalynn said with a laugh. “I’m actually praying for some turndowns and regrets.”
