Anne Boleyn star Jodie Turner-Smith has blasted the Royal Family as she voiced her support for Meghan Markle.
The 34-year-old actress, who played the role of Anne Boleyn in the Channel 5 series, lashed out at the British monarchy and called out the Royals for allegedly not doing enough to protect and embrace Meghan after her arrival to the UK and her marriage to Prince Harry.
“There’s a lot of resistance to new things that can push that institution forward in a way that more represents the world today,” Turner-Smith said.
“I think they could have looked at this marriage and that relationship as a way to evolve. They could have embraced it and embraced her fully, and protected her. And protected their son in a way that made him feel like he didn’t need to leave.”
Following her performance in the mini-series, The Queen actress also opened up about her controversial role and insisted many viewers were ready to see her play the role of Anne Boyle despite the backlash the show has been facing.
Turner-Smith became the first Black actress ever to portray the British Queen who was white. The decision to cast the 34-year-old as the queen has consecutively sparked a major social media debate whereas many viewers branded the show inaccurate.
“It’s much more approachable and appealing to a contemporary audience when you cast this way because we are distilling this down to a human experience. If you ask anyone to watch a film or to observe any art, you are asking them to suspend their beliefs,” the actress insisted in an interview with Radio Times.
“I am aware it’s going to be a stretch for some people because they will feel too distracted by that, but I think for a lot of other people who are finally ready to see the world in a different way, they’re going to see that this is a human story we are telling, and a fascinating one at that.”
The interview follows months after Meghan and Harry shocked the world with their claims and allegations against the Royals.
Speaking to Oprah back in March, Meghan insisted she was feeling suicidal and “didn’t want to be alive anymore” during her time in Palace. Meanwhile, Harry insisted that his family didn’t do enough to help Meghan amid her mental health struggles.
The couple also accused the Royals of racism when they claimed that one of the senior members expressed concerns that Archie’s skin would be too dark.
