Joe Biden, President, gives us an insider that he will run for a second term, joking into the press conference that he misses former president, Donald Trump.
When asked why he did not announce his intentions for the next election since there was already speculation of Donald Trump setting up his re-election committee, Biden responds, “My predecessor needed to. My predecessor, oh god, I miss him. My answer is yes, I plan to run for reelection, that is my expectation.”
Continuing with the questions, Biden assumed that the surge in migrants at the border is because he is a “nice guy.” He tells the press and others, “I guess I should be flattered that people are coming because I am the nice guy, that is why they are coming, that I am a decent man…. But the truth is nothing has changed.”
He talks about his policies being more humane, since Republicans argue that the border surge is caused by Biden’s rolled back of former president Trump’s stricter policies.
“I’m going to say, which I would never do, if an unaccompanied child ends up at the border we are just going to let them starve to death and stay on the other side. No previous administration did that, except Trump. I’m not going to do it.”
Biden goes on, saying that he will not make apologies that were underway and programs that did not exist before Trump became president that “have an incredible negative impact on the law, international law, as well as on human dignity.” By quoting this, he has referred to Trump’s decision, when he was president, to separate migrant children from their families as a policy that took heavy criticism.
Not only has he touched upon the next election and migrant surge, he announces that there will be 200 million COVID vaccine shots as his goal by the 100th day as president. There was confidence that schools will be re-opened fully as well.
There is a lot of pressure on the president, being grilled by many members of the media as he tries his best to answer it well. He has been known to verbal slips, especially since his slip up of calling Vice President Kamala Harris as “President Harris.”
He tells the press that Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the policy effort on the border, the scene where increased migration has come to thousands of children being held in shelters- some do not have the luxury of a bed to sleep in or enough food to eat.
Based on a CNN analysis, Biden is behind his 15 most recent predecessors on holding a formal press conference, but at least he has held one.
