The Joker just earned $1 billion at the box office, and the Warner Bros.
film is officially the first R-rated movie in history to get that amount at the global box office.
With its modest $62.5 million budget, ‘Joker’ became one of the most profitable films of all time!
Only seven weeks after its premiere, the critically-acclaimed movie reached the overwhelming figure, according to Forbes.
Over 40 movies have made a billion dollars at the box office. Recent ones include Spider-Man: Far From Home ($1.031 billion) and Aquaman ($1.048 billion).
Joker, which was created on $62.5 million budget, earned $316.692 million domestically.
Unlike Spider-Man: Far from Home ($1.131 billion) and Aquaman ($1.148 billion), Joker managed to hit the billion mark without any help from viewers in China.
If the film passes The Dark Knight ($1.005 billion), it will become the biggest-grossing film ever to not play in China.
While Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, may be the most successful R-rated film worldwide, MarketWatch still pointed out that domestically, The Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson still leads as it earned $370.8 million while Joker is still at $316.692 million.
In an interview with Los Angeles Times earlier this month, Joaquin said: “I wouldn’t just do a sequel just because the first movie is successful. That’s ridiculous.
“In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, “Todd [Phillips], can you start working on a sequel? There’s way too much to explore.” It was kind of in jest – but not really.”
The filmmaker said a sequel “would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does.”
The Oscar-nominated Borat writer said to Times: “Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, outside of all the noise and mishegoss of the last month and a half.”
