Joker sequel has been given green light by Warner Bros.
after Director Todd Phillips allegedly made a deal with the entertainment giant during a meeting.
As the insiders claimed, the decision to continue with a Joker sequel came shortly after the first movie’s massive box office success.
The movie, which was directed by Todd Phillips, raked in over $1 billion worldwide, meaning that it became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
As Hollywood Reporter shared, insiders have since claimed that the director had a meeting with Warner Bros. during which the sequel was given a green light.
In addition, it was suggested that the studio might also sign the deal with Joaquin Phoenix to see him return as the supervillain.
Previously, Phoenix has spoken out about his role as the Joker and the pressure associated with playing the infamous character.
“I thought it was important for it to be its own thing, to be its own interpretation. What’s interesting about this character is that everybody can interpret it however they want,” he told LADbible.
“Even with this film, I think the audience gets to interpret the character and what drives him, in a way that I think is unique for a lot of films, I mean it really asks the audience to participate, and I think that’s interesting.”
Speaking of high expectations that he faced, Joaquin added:
“I wasn’t that aware of it until two days before shooting when I went to do press in Toronto for another film and I was asked this question by all the journalists, and I went, ‘****, there’s a lot of expectations.’
“But that’s, you know in some ways, every movie you make, you’re going to come up against people’s expectations, even if it’s original work – if it’s simply just the writer and the filmmaker and what their expectations are.”
