Jon Stewart, a passionate advocate for the 9/11 responders, was caught on camera breaking down in tears as he was gifted a jacket worn by Ray Pfeifer, a deceased 9/11 hero.
In dramatic footage, the responders approached the American comedian and TV host before handing over the jacket worn by an N. Y. the firefighter who died to cancer following the terrorist attack.
The gifting occurred on Tuesday, June 11, moments before Stewart had given a stimulating speech at the House Judiciary Committee.
Ray Pfeifer is known as a hero firefighter who served FDNY for over 27 years. He also worked at the Ground Zero area for nearly a year following the collapse of the WTC.
Whenever Pfeifer wasn’t busy cleaning up the toxic rubbish generated by the terrorist attack, he was working on finding the bodies of the victims of the attack. At night, the diligent firefighter slept in his truck near his work zone.
Following eight years after the devastation of the World Trade Center, Pfeifer began suffering from ‘9/11 cough’ associated with the terrorist attack. Soon after, he was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer.
“I’m being poisoned and I’m dying, every single day, because of terrorism,” the firefighter said in an interview with Pix 11 back in 2014.
Despite his health complications, however, he admitted he was a “lucky man” for living long enough to see his children grow up, something that many other 9/11 responders didn’t have the chance to experience.
Pfeifer and Stewart first met in 2015 when they started working together to extend the Zadroga Act in order to cover healthcare of first responders until the year 2090.
Unfortunately, Pfeifer’s condition kept on deteriorating until the brave man passed away in 2017. At his funeral, Jon Stewart shared a touching eulogy.
