A journalist claims she was sacked from her job as a columnist after suggesting a name that Meghan and Harry should pick for their daughter.
Julie Burchill was a Daily Telegraph columnist who was fired shortly after making an insensitive tweet in which she suggested the Royal couple should name their daughter Georgina Floydina, a reference to George Floyd.
“What a missed opportunity! They could have called it Georgina Floydina!” Burchill wrote in her tweet after Meghan and Harry, who repeatedly blasted the British monarchy and accused a senior royal of racism, announced the birth of their first daughter, Lilibet Diana.
Needless to say, the columnist’s comment instantly sparked outrage with people condemning her for making a reference to the late man who was killed by a police officer.
“It’s been a lovely five years, and I’ll always be grateful to them for ending my Wilderness Years,” Burchill wrote in her Facebook post after allegedly getting sacked by the Daily Telegraph.
“However, I’d be lying if I said that I hadn’t often moaned to my husband recently about them always rejecting my *edgy* column ideas and giving me more pedestrian ones – which I’ve done splendidly anyway. I hope you can see my archive here. Onwards and upwards!”
As it happens, Burchill isn’t the only one feeling the heat after making a controversial comment about the name Meghan and Harry had picked for their daughter.
59-year-old Family Law Cafe barrister Joanna Toch was suspended after joining in on the debate and suggesting that Meghan should name her daughter after her Black mother, Doria Ragland.
“No Doria? Don’t black names matter?” Toch tweeted.
Responding to her comment, Burchill said: “I was hoping for Doria Oprah, the racist rotters.”
Following the backlash, Toch apologized for her ‘joke’ before proceeding by deleting her Twitter account.
“I am very sorry for the comment and what I saw as a joke. I’ve fought during my professional life against racism which is abhorrent,” she wrote.
