A top judge has divided the people after suggesting that mothers who refuse to let biological fathers see their children should have the kids taken from them.
Mr. Justice Coleridge from the UK has called for a rule called ‘three strikes and you’re out’ in an attempt to provide biological fathers with more rights, especially when it comes to seeing their children.
As the judge argued, fathers do not appear to be equal to mothers when it comes to having the right to access their children, whereas plenty of mothers decide to block fathers from their kids’ lives following bitter separation.
According to Mr. Coleridge, mothers who ignore three or more court orders to allow fathers to see their children should have their kids taken away.
The judge’s statement followed after a series of family courts reported facing difficulties dealing with child custody cases because the parents, mothers in particular, refuse to acknowledge legally-binding judgments.
“If I were to call it three strikes and you’re out it sounds insensitive but something like it perhaps should be the norm,” the 61-year-old judge said before explaining that mothers often defy legal orders to let fathers of their children have contact with them.
Despite violating the orders, however, most mothers get away with it without proper punishment as courts are reluctant to put mothers behind the bars due to the effects such actions could have on their children.
As Mr. Coleridge suggested, however, jailing parents might be the only way to get them to respect court orders.
