Kanye West has opened up about the incident that took place over a decade ago and revealed why he ran on the stage to interrupt Taylor Swift as she received the award for Best Female Video.
It was the year 2009 when the American rapper, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in 2018, ran on the stage during MTV Video Music Awards to interrupt the pop singer who was awarded for her hit ‘You Belong With Me’.
“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!” West said at the time, starting a years-long feud between him and Swift.
Now, in an interview that surfaced on Tuesday, the 43-year-old claimed it was God who influenced him and made him interrupt the awarding ceremony all those years ago.
“Right now, God is giving me the information … If God ain’t want me to run on stage and say Beyoncé had the best video, he wouldn’t have sat me in the front row. I would’ve been sitting in the back,” the rapper insisted.
“It wouldn’t have made it so ridiculous of an idea because I had never heard of this person before, and Single Ladies is, like, one of the greatest videos of all time. And I was only drinking Hennessy because I didn’t want to go to the awards show because it was a set-up.”
West also went on to suggest that it was God who influenced him to start reading the Bible after it brought him down on his knees.
“God brought me to my knees multiple times. The first time that I was put into the hospital in 2016, I actually started reading the bible. That was part of what God hit me with. You know, God has a calling on all of us and he uses us in different ways,” the 43-year-old said.
