A father saved the life of his 8-year-old son after the father donated his kidney to a stranger in order to receive another one for his son from them.
When his son, Harry Weir, was two years old, Harry was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and has been severely ill for most of his life.
Harry had to undergo dialysis treatment every day to help him remain alive.
Harry’s father, Mike, from Llantrisant, Glamorgan, Wales, was quoted saying that they understand that the transplant is not the cure and like would not be normal either for Harry or the couple.
He was simply glad that he has a healthier son now as well as dreams and hopes to live for.
As a baby, Harry was regularly unwell and suffered from viruses and constipation as a toddler.
It was only after he was admitted in the Llantrisant, Glamorgan, Wales, that it was discovered that Harry had some issues with his kidneys.
By the time Harry turned five, only 18% of his kidneys were functioning. The number dropped to 8% even after the doctors conducted intense chemotherapy sessions. Harry then spent two years on dialysis that he would require for ten hours every night.
Talking about the impact of dialysis, Mike revealed that the whole family’s sleep was disrupted since the procedure was so noisy.
Eventually, the family found out that Harry’s mother is a match for kidney donation but the idea was dropped when a CT scan depicted that she has a lot of arteries in her kidneys making the operation too risky.
However, after the doctors’ suggestion of pooled donation, the family was able to find a match, which needed Mike’s kidney in exchange. The operation was successfully done and Harry has never been healthier.
