The very mention of the word Chernobyl strikes fear in the mind of the people.
It takes them back 33 years in the past when the nuclear reactor exploded in Chernobyl.
Back then, it was still a part of the Soviet Union. Radiation experts suggest that the fallout was so massive and lethal, that it will take several hundred years before radiation level goes down and the area becomes safe for human habitation.
Though some of the outer-fringe areas, with less radiation, have been opened for researchers and tourists, the core areas are still cordoned off.
If you spend too much time in the radiation prone area, without proper preventive gear, then it will have adverse effects on your health. Recently, radiation specialists have uncovered a claw crane that has been appropriately termed as the ‘killer claw.’
Experts suggest that this claw crane was used after the massive nuclear fallout that took place 33 years ago. The then Soviet Union government has used this claw crane to lift the radioactive debris.
It has been mentioned in several research papers that the impact of the explosion caused the fuel rod to break in several pieces and land on the houses of the people, who had no clue of the danger that was coming their way.
The claw crane was used by the wreckage cleaning crew to lift the radioactive fuel rod parts and put them in one place.
As the claws of the crane were in contact with the radioactive waste for long, it too became highly dangerous. When the cleanup crew left Chernobyl, the claw crane was left behind.
Over the years, it has only accumulated radioactive element from the soil. Now the crane has become so highly radioactive that people will die if they touch the claws.
The entire Chernobyl area looks like a ghost town that ceased to exists suddenly. Guided tours highlight that can happen if people do not take preventive measures while working with radioactive substances.
Scientists are still baffled by the high radiation rate in the area even after so many years. It pains one to think what the people of Chernobyl went through on that fateful day.
