Jodi Brooks LaFreniere is a kindergarten teacher and was actually in her classroom when she was alerted to activity outside her home’s front door through her Ring camera.
Speaking to CNN, she said, “I was wondering who was at my house since my fiancé was away in Alaska, teaching. Since we live in a remote area, our driveway is a half-mile long, so for delivery people, it’s quite the drive to get to our house.”
That’s when she noticed FedEx courier Melvin Marlett.
He had just dropped off a big package for her at her Manistique home. But it’s what happened next that caught at LaFreniere’s heart and the rest of the Internet as well: As Marlett reached the door, he set it down then picked up a shovel and started clearing the stoop of snow.
She later shared the footage of the incredibly kind act on Facebook, captioning it with, “Shout out to this guy! He shoveled my stoop while I was gone.”
“Although we see many acts of kindness in the Upper Peninsula, it was still surprising to see that he went the extra step,” she told CNN. “I shared it with my coworkers immediately because I couldn’t believe it. It made my day.”
LaFreniere herself hadn’t spoken to Marlett before but her fiancé Rodney Riesland was usually at home when he dropped off packages so the two men had talked in the past.
“I would hope it’s something that anybody would have done. If you take care of your customers, they take care of you,” Marlett, who has been with FedEx for 23 years, told CNN.
Meantime, a FedEx spokeswoman confirmed Marlett’s identity and described his act as “above and beyond” in order to help a customer.
“There are good people out there who do selfless acts,” LaFreniere told CBS affiliate WCTV.
