The current coronavirus lockdown we are facing is not the worst thing in the world for many of us.
Anyone who has a TV, a couch, some cans of beer in the refrigerator, and money to last the lockdown’s duration is actually enjoying the situation.
While that might be the definition of enjoyment for you, the way the King of Thailand defines it is totally different and outrageously lucrative.
The royal has housed himself in a German luxury hotel, renting out every single room of the facility. He is isolating himself there with a group of his loved ones including his 20 concubines.
Might seem to be a big deal for us commoners but when you are the King of Thailand, you can easily afford to rent entire Hotel Sonnelbichl in Bavaria, the iconic German grand hotel, to serve as your isolation facility during the corona pandemic.
King Maha Vajiralongkorn established his self-isolation facility on the entire premises of the hotel Sonnelbichl after getting permission from the concerned local authorities.
However, the Thai public doesn’t look to be much pleased by this step of their king as they believe he should’ve stood with them in this time of need.
Unusual for the Thai people, they are raising their voice and showing dissent against their king going to Europe in these harsh times.
Thai public doesn’t protest very much because insulting the king or the institution of monarchy in Thailand can land you in prison for 15 years.
It is not yet known if the queen is with him or not but it is confirmed that the king sent back 119 people from his traveling entourage to Thailand over fears of being exposed to coronavirus.
The Grand Hotel Sonnelbichl, the king has rented, is situated near the ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Bavaria mountains.
This location is generally very beautiful at any time in the year but currently, in the early spring, the vista outside is breathtaking.
The king, being the king, is having a good time even though most of Germany and the rest of Europe is under strict lockdown. You don’t want to go out when you have an entire hotel at your disposal.
Thai king has a soft spot for Germany in his heart.
He spends a lot of time in Germany and even owns a second home there. As a matter of fact, the royal has not been seen in Thailand since February.
So far, our interaction with the coronavirus has told us that it does not attack on a single societal level. It affects all regardless of any social, cultural, national or ethnic background.
Some high-profile corona patients include Prince Charles and Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the UK. Among other high profile, self-isolated people are the Malaysian royals Sultan Abdullah and Sultan Ahmad Shah.
