The Spartacus star and Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas has passed away at the age of 103, his family confirmed.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Buydens, and three sons, Peter, Joel, and Michael.
Michael Douglas shared the heartbreaking news in a statement to People magazine. He said: “It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103.
“To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.
“But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband.
“Kirk’s life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet. Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad – I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son.”
It was in 1996 when Douglas suffered a stroke that left him with damaged facial nerves and slurred speech. However, his condition did not stop him from going to the Academy Awards ceremony two weeks later to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The legendary actor and producer made over 90movies in his seven-decade career. He was also known for the macho tough man roles he played.
Movies such as The Vikings and Spartacus made him one of the popular stars of the 1950s and 60s.
He did many notable television films in the 1970s and 1980s, including Amos and Victory at Entebbe.
Douglas also became an author in his 70s and he wrote The Ragman’s Son, The Gift, and Dance with the Devil.
The famed actor also became one of the leading philanthropists of Hollywood. The foundation he and his wife co-founded, The Douglas Foundation, has donated millions to different institutions.
One internet user commented: “Inevitable, but so sad. i remember watching him in so many movies when i was a kid. He was the last remaining legend of his era to survive the many great actors he starred along side with. May his soul rest in peace.”
Another wrote: “Him and his son Kirk were amongst the finest actors.May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
A third added: “I met him in the late 90s and had my picture taken with him. I have it hanging in my office.”
Someone else said: “103? Just wow. He was born in 1917? He has seen it all, he saw the world changing, im so jealous. RIP Sir.”
