Pet Owners Beware! Kissing Your Cats And Dogs Could Be Life-Threatening

Pet owners have been warned that kissing their beloved cats and dogs could turn into a life-threatening condition.

While most pet owners enjoy nothing more than cuddling with their furry companions, scientists have explained that kissing and licking could result in the spreading of antibiotic-resistant germs through saliva.

While the danger is real, psychologists believe that excessive showing of affection is “so deeply treasured” it will unlikely change any time soon.

Adele Dickson, a health psychologist, led a Glasgow Caledonian University study and reviewed the relationship between 35 subjects and their pets that had all been treated with antibiotics in the past.

“This close contact could potentially put adults, children and the pets themselves at risk of transferring bugs that are resistant to antibiotics through saliva,” Dr. Dickson, who is a proud owner of a golden retriever, claimed.

“I would also advise any open wounds be covered so there’s no risk of transferring anything from skin to skin.”

While the experts admitted the risks of affection turning into a life-threatening condition are low, they suggested people to avoid kissing their pets on the mouth and letting them lick their faces. Additionally, they advised everyone to wash their hands after touching pets.

As Dr. Dickson added, pet owners should also keep their pets away from antibiotics when possible and make sure they always eat from their own bowls.

“The biggest take-home message to pet owners from this study is to think twice about whether your pet, you, your children or other family members actually need antibiotics,” the research lead added.

“Many pet owners told us they felt a sense of guardianship and protection towards their pet when it became ill and they would specifically ask for antibiotics to reassure themselves that they were helping but it’s actually doing more harm than good if they are not necessary.

“I know how important that affectionate relationship between the owner and their pet is to both mental and physical health and well-being.

“I’m not saying pet owners need to stop showing affection for their companion animals because we know from our research and from speaking to 23 British dog, cat and rabbit owners who shared their stories that these behaviors are so deeply treasured they are unlikely to be amenable to change.”
