Have you seen those little grey fluff balls sitting on the trees with their innocent eyes shining so bright? Yes, those cute babies that you may have seen but it looks like the next generation will not be able to see them.
What is the reason? No, they are not extinct yet but their numbers have fallen down. The numbers have fallen down so much that the researchers say these animals are functionally extinct.
Again, what does this means?
Well, the researchers have found out that there are not enough Koalas left in the world who can mate and make enough babies to carry on their species. The numbers of this animal are constantly falling and we are not able to protect them.
Australian Koala Foundation says there are as little as 80,000 Koalas left in the entire world. This means they will not be able to produce enough offspring to carry on their next generation.
The population of Koala is so small that the environment is no more affected by its presence. In simple terms, the species has gone into serious minority and the environment is more concentrated on other animals.
Also, there are no pairs in the wild that can mate and produce babies together. This means this is the end of Koalas.
The foundation has been tracking these animals in the places they considered were Koala friendly for a very long time but now the there 41 of such friendly places where koalas are nowhere to be seen.
It is also a bit difficult to keep a track of them because the species has a habit of constantly moving around.
The major shocking thing is according to a study that was carried out back in 2016, there were probably 144,000 and 600,000 koalas left and now the stats are changed with a huge fall.
