The 17-year-old who shot two protestors in Kenosha has been extradited to Wisconsin.
Kyle Rittenhouse has been extradited to the state to face murder charges after a hearing on Friday.
He fatally shot Anthony Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum during the riots in August this year and claims the men attacked him first and he was only acting in self-defense. He immediately fled Wisconsin to go to his home in Illinois, where he has been detained ever since.
Rittenhouse faces one count of first degree reckless homicide, one count of first degree intentional homicide, one count of attempt at first degree intentional homicide, one count of possession of a dangerous weapon, and two counts of first degree recklessly endangering safety.
His attorneys said to the court: “This Illinois child must go free.” However, a judge ruled that he must be sent back to Wisconsin.
Judge Paul Novak said that defense attorneys had characterized the state charges as politically motivated. His six-page ruling reads: “This Illinois court shall not examine any potential political impact a Wisconsin District Attorney potentially considered in his charging decision.”
He also noted that it is not for a judge in Illinois to “reevalute probable cause determined by a Wisconsin court.”
As officers started to lead Rittenhouse from the hearing room, his mother broke down in tears.
Many people are hailing the teen as an ‘American hero’ who was defending the town from rioters but others describe him as a domestic terrorist who incited demonstrators by showing up wielding a rifle.
If convicted on the intentional homicide charge, Rittenhouse could be sentenced to life in jail.
