On Friday, White House officials said three federal agents that have been dispatched to Portland, Oregon likely lost their sights forever because of the lasers that the protestors pointed straight to their eyes.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany shared with the press the injuries that other agents had to sustain while they were quelling the anti-racism protests that are continuing in Portland.
According to her, one agent had his / her hand impaled by nails while another sustained major injury to the bones when a protestor fired a pellet gun with intent to injure. All five of them are said to have been injured during the clash on Monday in the courthouses of Portland.
McEnany unequivocally stated that the administration will not allow and neglect this lawlessness and “anarchy”. Observers understood her messaging to be reflective of the president and other senior official’s views – dispatching federal agents against the city’s mayor has caused political controversy.
On Monday, federal agents clashed with more than a 1,000 protestors at the Multnomah County Justice Center and another federal courthouse in the city. Fox News described the protestors as making a sudden descent into the courts.
In the same report, other supposed aggressiveness from the protestors have been outlined. For instance, a few protestors apparently threw live fireworks to the courts near the agents while another publicly threatened to cut the water supply line.
Deputy director of the Federal Protective Service Richard Cline also noted that the protestors forcefully removed the plywood structure on the exterior of another courthouse and threw objects through the open windows without consideration. Cline characterized them as “rioters”.
He added that multiple fires broke out during the clash, which he believes is the work of protestors. After the situation subsided, the exterior of buildings that were spray painted by the protestors were photographed by the reporters on the scenes. Local residents also noted blocked traffic.
After three agents likely lost their eyesights, the agency has supplied protective eyewear for all its agents. The same attack using lasers was observed as late as Thursday when a crowd of 2,000 gathered in the same region.
