The last known Sumatran rhinoceros is no more making the species Extinct in Malaysia.
On Saturday, the 25 years old Iman, last living Sumatran rhinoceros died of severe pain that was affecting her bladder due to uterine tumors. The report of the same was given out by Borneo Island’s eastern Sabah state’s wildlife department.
Iman was a female rhinoceros and the last one to live in the country. The last male Sumatran rhinoceros to be living died just 6 months prior to Iman.
Iman was captured in 2014 and when she was captured the wildlife doctors did a medical examination on her. She was then diagnosed with the tumor.
Augustine Tuuga’s department Director said that they were working with her and were taking proper care of her. They had known that she would die off her cancer but they did not expect it to happen this soon.
The officials said after examining the body that the tough lady died at 5.35 pm of Malaysia’s local time. The authorities are now planning on to breed the species as they have already harvested the cells in order to increase the number of animals of the species.
Another female rhino that was living in captivity for years gave up and died in the years 2017.
Christina Liew, Environment Minister of Sabah said “We had known this will happen sooner or later but we are left devastated with the news.
The prime cause of sudden death is the shock but she died a natural death. Ever since she was brought in the captivity in 2014, she had been taken care of without even missing a moment.
She has always been under someone’s eyes. Even till the moment, she passed away, she was being taken care of.
We wish she could live with us for a little longer but she could not.”
