Two attorneys from New York have been arrested and charged after throwing a Molotov cocktail, also known as a firebomb, at an NYPD police van.
The attack took place in Brooklyn during a violent protest over George Floyd’s death on Saturday at 1 am, whereas 32-year-old corporate attorney Colinford Mattis and his accomplice, 31-year-old attorney Urooj Rahman, allegedly hurled a Molotov cocktail at an empty police cruiser.
According to the police, the firebomb that was thrown at the vehicle parked in front of Fort Greene’s 88th Precinct station failed to ignite.
After the failed attempt to burn the vehicle, Mattis and Rahman made a getaway in their vehicle as per the New York Daily News.
After a chase, the police caught and arrested the attorney duo whose attack was caught on one of the surveillance cameras located on the DeKalb Avenue where the police station in question lies.
Both Mattis and Rahman face federal charges and a mandatory sentence of 5 years. According to the reports, their actions could land them in jail for up to 20 years.
Mattis is a Princeton and NYU School of Law graduate and an associate of corporate law firm Pryor Cashman according to his LinkedIn profile.
Meanwhile, Rahman graduated from NY’s Fordham University and was described as an “angel” by the supervisor of her building.
Following the unusual attack, Brooklyn US Attorney Richard Donaghue slammed the attorneys’ actions by saying:
“No rational human being can ever believe that hurling firebombs at police officers and vehicles is justified.”
